| S&D strasbourg, 07/10/25 Today, during a plenary debate in Strasbourg, the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament emphasized the importance of establishing a Palestinian State to ensure long-lasting peace and security in the region. This comes on the second anniversary of the brutal terrorist attack by Hamas, during which they commemorated all the victims and their families and called for the release of all hostages. Following the latest developments in the region, S&D leader Iratxe García insisted that any peace plan should include an end to the ongoing massacre in Gaza, allow the delivery of humanitarian aid, and be based on the two-state solution with the recognition of both Israel and Palestine. Moreover, García called on the Commission and EU leaders to listen to citizens from all over Europe who are peacefully urging the European Union to suspend the EU-Israel association agreement, impose sanctions on Netanyahu’s goverment, implement an arms embargo and support a reconstruction plan for Gaza. Iratxe García, S&D Group leader, said: “Today marks two years since the terrorist attack by Hamas that left 1,195 people dead and 251 taken hostage. We remember the victims and their families, and we demand the release of all hostages. “Genocide can’t be the response to terrorism. You do not defeat terror by killing 67,000 Palestinians, including 20,000 children, nor by turning Gaza into a wasteland where two million people live without water, medicine, electricity, food or hope. Terrorism is defeated through the rule of law; with justice, not vengeance. “The European Union cannot remain silent. It must suspend the association agreement with Israel, impose sanctions on Netanyahu’s government, and declare an arms embargo. Europe must choose: complicity or courage. And courage means defending the only possible solution, two peoples, two States, living in peace and equality.” .
