The 3rd edition of the S&D Latin America Days, organised in cooperation with the Party of European Socialists (PES) and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), will take place in Brussels on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 October.
This event will bring together S&D members and progressive partners from Latin America, to strengthen our partnerships and pursue a progressive EU–Latin America Agenda, focusing on our common pillars: democracy, respect for international law, in particular human rights and humanitarian principles, equal opportunities for all, and a sustainable development that respects high social and environmental standards.
Working together to secure our common pillars becomes even more urgent, as some geopolitical and factual powers are organising themselves to challenge what are the basis of our strength – our strategic autonomy and the wellbeing of the peoples and nature – and the limits to theirs.
Background and context
Latin America and the Caribbean are not only natural partners of the EU, as we share history, culture, and human ties, but we are partners of choice.
Together, we lead the implementation of the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. And we do it by example, reflecting objectives in the widest network of political, cooperation and trade agreements. The stability of our partnership has allowed the EU to become the first investor in the region and one of its main trading partners. The defence of our shared values and principles become especially important in this increasingly multipolar world, and they will continue guiding us in the ratification process of the EU-Mercosur and EU-Mexico agreements.
The 2023 EU–CELAC Summit marked a turning point in this direction, under the leadership of key progressive governments on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue working to defend this agenda ahead of the 2025 EU-CELAC Summit that will take place on 9-10 November, in Santa Marta (Colombia).
